When Henry Cavill came to Man of Steel, the actor wasn’t a big name in Hollywood and not much was known about how Zack Snyder - the great director behind movies like 300 and Watchmen - would make The Last Son of Krypton. By the time Cavill next appears in Snyder’s hand in the Justice League, which will arrive on HBO Max in 2021, it will be nearly ten years after that start and now seems like the perfect time to get more out of Cavill’s version of Superman. Things have changed significantly, Cavill is a huge star (partly because of Superman and partly because of the success of The Witcher series) and Superman’s arc that seems closer to its end. Zack Snyder has said in the past that the goal of his approach to Superman was to "explain" how someone becomes the all-American, flawless demigod that Clark Kent eventually turns into. Snyder seems to have been more interested in potholes and how they turned Clark into Superman than he was in a more direct Superman film. But between Justice League - which gives fans a "version" of Clark's evolution into Superman - and Zack Snyder's upcoming Justice League, which will give fans more insight into what Snyder's plans were for him, Cavill's Man of Steel now seems closer. at the end of his journey of self-discovery. If we combine that with his appearance in Shazam! - where he seemed universally loved and who was accepted as the greatest and best superhero in the world - and you have something that came close to the dynamics that Superman fans are used to in the DC universe. In a way, it gives Cavilla a clean slate going forward. It’s not a relaunch, as he still has those stories behind him that information about his character, but for fans who love Snyder’s vision of DC movies, giving Cavilla an elevated place highlighted in films after Snyder is a reward in itself. For those who don’t care about Snyder, think of it as Thor: Ragnarok. Even with the events in Thor and Thor: The Dark World behind it, the character can still incorporate it into something that is totally new and visually exciting on its own merits. Cavill is rumoured to have signed a contract with Warner to return in supporting roles in a number of upcoming DC projects, and that could be exactly what we need now. He is number 1 on the list for The Witcher, which would make making Superman’s solo film very difficult, even if Warner Bros. wanted it (and the rumours are such that they’re not quite sure about it yet). Fans who loved Snyder’s films and those who didn’t, almost all agree: Henry Cavill provided a great show as Superman. And now that things are clear, nothing stops him from redefining the character for our time. Just kidding as much as you want, but the moment “on my planet, it means hope” in Man of Steel presented a mission for Superman that the character couldn’t follow because Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League were so busy trying to revive DC Universe. But basically, Superman is the one who brings hope. He is in fact a decent person who always does the right thing because it is the right thing, whether it is easy or not. And such a person could use more in 2020. That’s not to say Cavill should ignore the imaginary layered behaviour he brought to the character in Snyder’s films. Instead, he now has the opportunity to incorporate these elements of Superman into someone who must be responsible for wearing the big red symbol of “hope”. Not so long ago, fans routinely questioned whether we needed Superman in the 21st century at all. It was a widespread theme in comics like Kingdom Come by Alex Ross and Mark Waid and found its way into Superman Returns. There was a feeling that Superman was too powerful and too good and that the world no longer wanted and needed it. But the thing of hope is that she is incredibly powerful. Everyone wants her, at the end of the day, so with a world that seems to be on the brink of so many different disasters, there’s really something appealing about someone powerful enough to stand there and take all those blows and not fall down. In a world where we see people on the news every day with no sense of empathy and seem determined to step on anyone’s path to progress, it’s easy to gravitate to someone who isn’t self-aware about doing the right things.
