The city of Geneva as a laboratory for cities with a greener future - that was the vision realized by the Braillard Architects Foundation (FBA), the first international workshop for architects and engineers in spatial and urban planning, which developed pollution reduction tactics and tools in the cities. The two-week Transition Workshop 2020 ended on July 24, and the goal was to train professionals who will implement the change towards zero carbon emissions by 2050, using tangible examples from the urban landscape. Why is this important? Sustainable urbanization is one of the biggest drivers of energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and consequently - climate change. It, therefore, becomes imperative that cities be well designed and managed. With the support of the Geneva-based United Nations Environment Program, the FBA has launched the Eco-Century Project to examine the relationship between spatial planning and planetary resources. The workshop was a test of the new, more comprehensive educational framework that the FBA envisions, and will be led by a new generation of urban architects, designers, engineers and political figures. The City of Geneva, the Canton of Geneva, the cole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the Liechtenstein Institute for Strategic Development, the Bureau Haus and the Services Industriels de Geneva (SIG) are project partners. Ecological transition "The ecological transition is now. The new generation of motivated and trained professionals will act as a collective implementer of change, provide support and inspire a movement towards sustainable development of places, communities, cities and regions. It is crucial to develop a new cycle of knowledge and skills to create and accelerate projects in the ecological transition. "Cities and territories must develop new projects to achieve zero carbon emissions, in terms of space, society and aesthetics, as a global and local existential challenge," said Panos Mantziaras, FBA Director. The three goals of the workshop are: raising awareness, transferring design tools and encouraging the new generation; raising awareness of sustainable architecture, urbanism and spatial landscaping; as well as the creation and transfer of design tools and methods for resilient and durable buildings, cities and regions. Mantras say the most urgent goal for him is to give the Canton of Geneva new ideas and tools for implementing environmental design strategies, as well as to advise the private sector, which is the real builder in Geneva. "The ecological transition is a very complex topic. "We are modestly trying to create something that does not exist at the moment: genetic material for the school of transition."
