The U.S. Senate has unanimously approved a law banning federal employees from using the TikTok app on official electronic devices.
The app is owned by ByteDance, and the Chinese company has until September 15 to sell the popular short video sharing app to Microsoft or face a total ban in the United States. While negotiations between Microsoft and ByteDance are underway, Trump has gone a step further, wanting part of the deal for the state as well. Under Chinese law of 2017, companies there must support and cooperate with reporting services. A ban was passed last month that meets the conditions for the law to take effect. TikTok has previously stated that their top priority is to promote a secure user privacy environment. They said they were working with experts from the US Department of Homeland Security to protect the application from outside influence and possible sharing of fake news about the upcoming presidential election.
